Three amazing brunch spots in Vancouver
In this food writer’s humble opinion, the most important meal of the day is not breakfast—it’s brunch! Brunch takes the sustenance of breakfast and combines it with the taste and diversity of lunch. That’s why sometimes it’s fun to drive around on Sunday, feverishly looking for the most amazing breakfast/lunch fusions in all of the greater Vancouver area. You really never know what you’re going to find, and often times you can discover real gems like the elk steak I got at Seb’s. All you really need is the YP mobile app, a strong appetite, and a sense of adventure. Here’s what I turned up last month in the way of organic brunch spots:
Aphrodite’s Cafe and Pie Shop (3598 West 4th Avenue Vancouver)
This cafe is full of vegan and vegetarian options, yet still prides itself on comfort foods like turkey pot pie and vegetarian chili. The late founder, Allan Christian, grew the restaurant out of his love of organic farming co-ops and
pies. The diversity of its ingredients is reflected in a brunch menu that includes Wild Mushroom Quiche, Caramelized Leek and Lentil Soup, a Salt Spring Frittata with cherry tomatoes and goat feta, customizable omelettes and much more.
Aphrodite’s serves some of the freshest local fare in the Vancouver area.
Seb’s Market Cafe (592 East Broadway, Vancouver)
This cafe divides its energies between catering, creating a good market experience and being a good restaurant. Fortunately, it succeeds at all three. The brunch menu features organic eggs and zero trans-fat canola oil. Their omelette options include Spinach, Onions, and Chevre, Roasted Garlic and Shitake Mushrooms, Bacon and Caramelized Apple, Basil Pesto and Havarti, and Crab and Avocado. The scrambled eggs add-ons include choices of smoked salmon and caribou meat. This restaurant also offers 6 oz. elk medallions!
Theresa’s (1260 Commercial Dr, Vancouver)
Theresa’s is a worked owned and run, fair trade/organic restaurant that offers free wi-fi and a gluten and vegan-friendly menu. Fill your belly with the Salsbury Benny poached eggs with avocado, tomato and hollondaise over toast; or go with the Grant tofu scramble; wheat-free pancakes and scrambled eggs with wild smoked salmon; Napier home-style porridge. You can also get fresh-squeezed juice. I think I’ve made a fairly convincing case that brunch is the most important meal of the day. Especially for diners that don’t wake up until noon on Sunday. For these lucky Vancouver-based souls, it’s time to venture out for some of the best eats of your life!
