15 things to do in Vancouver this week

Ignore the shopping you know you’re supposed to be doing with a few of the wonderful events happening in Vancouver this week.

KOOZA by Cirque du Soleil

  • What: The latest show from world-renowned Cirque du Soleil. High flying acrobatics, astounding feats of strength, and hilarious clowns, all with that special Cirque charm.
  • Where: Concord Pacific Place – 88 Pacific Boulevard, Vancouver
  • When: Daily until Tuesday, December 29

Langara Graduation Show at Yuk Yuks

  • What: The students of Langara’s stand-up comedy course hit the stage tonight, to show the people of Vancouver what they’ve got. Who will sink? Who will swim? What do they plan on doing with their educations? Who knows?
  • Where: Yuk Yuks Vancouver – 2837 Cambie Street, Vancouver
  • When: Monday, December 7; 8 p.m.

Animal Inside Out

  • What: The newest exhibit at the TELUS World of Science, Animal Inside Out features dozens of delicately preserved specimens across dozens of species. Preserved using a process called plastination, every muscle fiber, tendon, and organ is on display for you to see. Gross right?
  • Where: TELUS World of Science – 1455 Quebec Street, Vancouver

Half Moon Run

  • What: How about some Canadian indie rock? Hailing from Montreal by way of Comox, Half Moon Run have been on the road since 2010, with their latest single “Turn Your Love” hitting #11 on the Canadian Alternative charts. These guys are going somewhere, so catch them while you can.
  • Where: Imperial Vancouver – 319 Main Street, Vancouver
  • When: Tuesday, December 8; 8 p.m.

Nashville Pussy

  • What: Legendary rockers Nashville Pussy blow through Vancouver Tuesday, and if you’ve got any respect for that part of your brain that loves handlebar moustaches, frizzed out hair, and electric riffs, you’ll be there.
  • Where: Rickshaw Theatre – 254 East Hastings Street, Vancouver
  • When: Tuesday, December 8; 8 p.m.

Everything Must Go at Hot Art Wet City

  • What: If you were waiting for the hottest deals in the Vancouver art scene, now is your chance. Hot Art Wet City is digging all the past year’s work out of storage and selling it for up to 25% off. These are future classics from Vancouver’s future art legends. Don’t miss  out!

Mushroomhead

  • What: Metal band Mushroom head come to Venue tonight with some of the hardest, loudest, grossest music out there. Not for the faint of heart, but you knew that already, didn’t you?

Speaker Series – Paysavvy

  • What: Learn all about the future of cloud-based finance and payrolls, human resources in a changing professional landscape, and the software that will make managing your business a dream, all from the Director of People and Culture at Paysavyy.

A Traditional Christmas

  • What: Tonight is the opening night of the Vancouver Orchestra’s Traditional Christmas. All of the beloved Christmas classics, played by the city’s best classical ensemble. Tonight’s show is at St. Andrew’s-Wesley Church, but if you can’t go tonight check the website for venues and times.

Christmas Drive-in at the River District

  • What: Cuddle up under the stars, with a nice cup of hot chocolate (or hot soy milk, as allergies may be) for tonight’s Christmas Drive-in. Catch Jim Carrey’s virtuoso performance as The Grinch, followed by beloved class a Christmas Story. Doesn’t get any better than that.

The Dark Eighties

  • What: Everyone remembers the mirror shades and back combed hair, but what about the alt-scene? What about the Goth, the Deathrock, the Shoegazers? You didn’t know, but you know now.

War for the Holidays

  • What: A play using the Roedde House Museum as its backdrop, War for the Holidays envisions a family Christmas party with the Gregson. With World War One raging across Europe, how can one enjoy the best time of the year? Maybe one can’t.

Family Chanukah

Baker’s Holiday Market

  • What: Today is your last chance to get hot, fresh, holiday baked goods from some of Vancouver’s most passionate bakers. The event is free, but the baked goods… oh, the baked goods will cost you. The prices are very reasonable, though. That sounded a  lot more sinister than it is.
