Major food hall destination coming to new Amazon office in downtown Vancouver

An operator has been selected for the food hall that will be going into The Post office and retail redevelopment in downtown Vancouver.

QuadReal Property Group, the owner of the property, reaffirmed the food hall component of the project today with the announcement that Surrey-based The Joseph Richard Group (JRG) will create and operate a “culinary and retail market experience.”

It will occupy 26,000 sq ft of the 185,000 sq ft retail floor area within the former post office building’s heritage podium. There will be a mix of full-service, sit-down, table-service, and quick-service restaurants within this food hall concept.

“I think our commitment to this project, especially at this time, should speak to our confidence that this sector will rebound as will Vancouver’s downtown core,” said Ryan Richard Moreno, the CEO and co-founder of JRG, in a statement.

“As with any of our venues, guests can expect unique experiences which include top-quality offerings, notable talent and uncompromising commitment to every guest.”

JRG operates nearly two dozen establishments, including its Townhall public house and S+L Kitchen & Bar restaurant chains, but this will be its first food hall concept.

Food halls generally have elevated offerings over food courts, and commercial landlords are increasingly choosing the food hall concept as their multi-establishment dining option over traditional food courts.

Some popular examples of food halls include the global Time Out Market chain, which recently opened a location at Eaton Centre in downtown Montreal. Within Metro Vancouver, major food halls are also planned for the Oakridge Centre redevelopment and The Amazing Brentwood mall, which is now nearing the opening of its food hall.

The Post’s heritage podium will also contain a 50,000 sq ft flagship Loblaws City Market grocery store, and cafes such as Deville Coffee and Buro The Espresso Bar.

A number of significant retailers and restaurants have yet to be announced within this multi-level retail podium, which is the single largest infusion of new additional retail space in downtown Vancouver in about two decades.

The major restaurant and retail component within the The Post is meant to serve both the Amazon offices within the building and the surrounding area, as well as the growing general office employment, commercial intensification, residential population, and tourism in downtown.

Amazon is the sole office tenant of The Post, after the landlord formally announced in September 2020 that the company had pre-leased all 1.1 million sq ft being built within the redevelopment. Approximately 6,000 Amazon office jobs will be located in this building alone.

The Post is expected to reach full completion in 2023, upon which Amazon’s tenancy will begin. The food hall, Loblaws, and other businesses are also expected to open at that time.
