The Poke Guy to bring customizable poke bowls to Vancouver

Poke, a raw fish salad hailing from Hawaii, is really having its moment in the sun. Not only is the island staple featuring on more and more menus around the city but a number of dedicated poke spots are expected to open this year.

Just last week we reported that Pacific Poke a build-your-own poke bar would be opening in September, and now we have news that another devoted shop will also be crafting poke bowls by late summer/early fall.

Founded by husband and wife duo Jak and Angela Quan, The Poke Guy will offer Vancouverites pre-set poke creations as well as DIY versions. Although the fast-casual joint does not have a fixed address yet, negotiations are ongoing. Areas between Kitsilano and Main Street are being considered, says Quan.

Never truly understanding why there was such limited poke options available in Vancouver Jak and Angela have been desperate to share this delicious dish with Vancouverites.

With roots in Hawaii, Jak and Angela have not only received support from family and friends but also help, in terms of recipes and ideas.

Wanting to keep with the “island style,” The Poke Guy will be a grab-and-go type spot, with seating for about 15 to 20 guests. “Our main focus is sustainability,” says Quan, therefore patrons can expect to find Ocean Wise seafood and eco-friendly packaging, utensils, and containers.

While the pair are trying not to stray too far away from the traditional Hawaiian poke, they will be experimenting with some unique ideas. “We have a few fun features up our sleeves,” reveals Quan.

In terms of ordering, the concept is similar to that of Freshii. Everything will be customizable. Patrons will choose a base, protein, “mixins” (toppings added to the bowl like avocados, mangoes, pineapples, green onions, edamame, and nori), and sauces. A wide range of selections for those who love rice or for those who are more “carb conscious” will also be available.

Update 07/15/16: The Poke Guy will move into a space at 420 Richards Street.
