Tesla driving on Richmond sidewalk sparks headshakes and ridicule

Apr 8 2025, 7:31 pm

Vancouver was recently named one of the worst cities for traffic, so it’s no surprise that drivers around the region are trying to find a shortcut wherever they can.

A video recently shared on Facebook shows a delivery driver in a Tesla SUV driving on the sidewalk beside Westminster Highway in Richmond.

Jay Chong, who filmed the footage and shared it on social media, explained that he wasn’t shocked by the sight of the driver on the pedestrian pathway.

“This incident was not at all surprising considering the types of drivers present in Richmond,” Chong said. “We have the famous Facebook page for a reason.”

According to the BC Motor Vehicle Act, “A driver must not drive on a sidewalk, walkway, or boulevard, except when entering or leaving a driveway or lane or when entering or leaving land adjacent to a highway, or by permission granted under a bylaw.”

The City of Richmond’s driving bylaws are similar, though more refer to where a vehicle can stop. “No person shall stop or stand a vehicle upon a sidewalk, sidewalk crossing, boulevard, or centre median.”

Daily Hive reached out to Richmond RCMP, who confirmed that no investigation into the video has been launched at this time.

“”Speaking generally, the offence of drive on the sidewalk is covered under Section 200  of the Motor Vehicle Act with a fine of $ 81.00 and two demerit points,” added Corporal Adriana O’Malley, Media Liason Officer for the Richmond RCMP. “However, depending on the specific circumstances involved, additional Motor Vehicle Act offences may also apply.”

Comments online expressed a mixture of frustration and ridicule at seeing the Tesla SUV casually drive on the Richmond sidewalk.

“I live on this road, and this happens every day,” said one commenter.

“Another Tesla moron,” added another with a headshake emoji.

“Fantuan + white Tesla = Richmond final boss,” said a third person.
