Fans think Vancouver International Film Festival is teasing big Taylor Swift news

Taylor Swift mania is alive and well in the city, if the reaction to a teaser posted by the Vancouver International Film Festival is any indication.

On Tuesday, VIFF posted a graphic to social media with the already-iconic giant orange lock over the top of its website’s homepage.

While the post was hinting at upcoming news about this year’s 44th annual festival from Oct. 2 to 12, Swifties from across the country chimed in with their belief that the post could be hinting at something more.

“Omg, as a Vancouver Swiftie, I’m freaking out right now,” said one fan.

“Hey, so as a Swiftie in Canada, you cannot play with my heart like this,” added another commenter.

“You know what you’re doing by invoking the Swiftie excitement,” replied another user.

Daily Hive reached out to VIFF to ask if the social media post was related to Taylor Swift, who confirmed that it is not connected to anything directly related to the 14-time Grammy Award winner.

However, there are more exciting announcements coming soon about VIFF 2025, running from Oct. 2 to 12.

The full festival lineup will be revealed on Aug. 27, joining the recent news of Canadian premieres of films like What Does That Nature Say to You by director Hong Sangsoo, Dracula from director Radu Jude, and Seeds by director Brittany Shyne.

VIFF will also be adding 20 per cent more screenings in October, along with two new venues for 2025: the Arts Club Theatre’s Granville Island Stage and the Alliance Française.

Vancouver is a hotbed of Taylor Swift speculation surrounding the upcoming release of her next album, The Life of a Showgirl.

Fans of the music superstar are convinced her latest Vancouver concert wasn’t just a show, it was a clue.

Taylor Nation, Swift’s official fan engagement account, posted a glittery red lock graphic with a martini glass–shaped keyhole and wrote, “We can’t find the key! Lost it in Vancouver 😔 #TSTheLifeofaShowgirl.”

But to Swifties, the keyhole looks suspiciously familiar, like the layout of the Eras Tour stage in Vancouver, with its long runway leading to a diamond-shaped platform.

Fans think the “key” might have been “hidden” during Taylor Swift’s last Vancouver show and could unlock something special tied to her upcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl.

Some suspect bonus songs or early access to tracks, while others think it could point to a bigger announcement, maybe even a documentary.

Adding fuel to the fire, screenshots have been circulating of what appears to be a “locked” Showgirl tracklist on music platforms, featuring all 12 songs, including “The Fate of Ophelia,” “Elizabeth Taylor,” and “Wi$h Li$t.”

Swift officially announced The Life of a Showgirl on Aug. 13, revealing its Oct. 3 release date on the New Heights podcast.
