The snow may have melted around Metro Vancouver, but drivers are still wary that more white stuff may fall before the end of winter. That may be why one local driver decided to stay off the roads in a strange way.
A video recently shared on Facebook shows an SUV driving on the sidewalk near the Surrey and White Rock border by the Semiahmoo Shopping Centre.
Colby Zawila, who filmed the footage and shared it on social media, explained that it all started when he saw two individuals in their SUV parked on the corner of 152nd Street and 16th Avenue.

“I gave them a friendly reminder they were parked on the sidewalk, and they proceeded to drive down the sidewalk eastbound on 16th Avenue in front of the newer high-rise,” Zawila explained in his post.
According to the BC Motor Vehicle Act, “A driver must not drive on a sidewalk, walkway, or boulevard, except when entering or leaving a driveway or lane or when entering or leaving land adjacent to a highway, or by permission granted under a bylaw.”
The City of Surrey’s driving bylaws are similar. “A driver shall not drive on a sidewalk, walkway, boulevard or curb, except when entering or leaving a driveway or laneway.”

Hundreds of comments online expressed a mixture of disbelief and ridicule at seeing the SUV casually drive on the sidewalk during the recent snowfall.
“We were right beside them on the road when this happened,” said one person. “Thought something wrong (a medical emergency) was happening, but then the passenger just got out of the car and left. Very odd.”
“Pretty scary when they don’t know the difference between a sidewalk and the road,” added another commenter.
“This person is why ICBC rates are so high,” said a third person.
