A 23-year-old Surrey motorcycle driver was fined nearly $2,000 after a witness captured some reckless driving on Highway 1.
On July 3, the witness saw a motorcycle near 176th Street in Surrey and captured it weaving in traffic and travelling at excessive speed on their high-definition dash camera. The driver, motorcycle, and licence plate were clearly visible in the footage.
“It’s not hard to imagine how the speed and unsafe driving behaviour in this video could have easily led to the motorcyclist’s death,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol (BCHP).
Four days after this occurred, BCHP was able to find the motorcycle’s owner.
“When the video quality is high-quality, and we have a witness ready to testify in court, we can and do follow up with over-the-top driving violations,” McLaughlin said.

Police issued the motorcycle owner $1,769 in tickets for driving without consideration, excessive speed (more than 60 kilometres per hour over the limit), unsafe lane changes, lane changes without signal, and fail in duty to supply information.
“We understand how much bad driving not only makes our highways unacceptably unsafe, it also annoys safe drivers,” said McLaughlin. “We’re enforcing these laws to improve people’s behaviour by delivering real consequences.”
