Thursday Artist Talk: Doreen Brust Johnson, “A Dream is to Write”

What: Canadian historical fiction novelist Doreen Brust Johnson tells her story of writing novels while having no formal education beyond grade eleven. She will take you through her early years growing up on a small farm in Saskatchewan to where she is now: a published author with three books titled Walking Barefoot in my ShoesSounds in My Shadow, and Momma, Momma, the Preacher’s Comin’.  In addition to sharing her writing journey and how she navigated the publishing world, Doreen will tell stories of northern prairie life, making history come alive. Copies of her books will be available to purchase at the talk.

Surrey Doors Open 2019

What: Surrey Doors Open is an annual one-day event for organizations to invite community members to “discover the story behind every door”. This free event at 27 venues offers fun activities for all ages, behind-the-scenes guided tours, entertainment, contests, prizes and more.

Surrey Fest Downtown 2019

What: The annual Surrey Fest Downtown promotes and celebrates community pride through a day of fun and entertainment for all ages while providing a venue for groups and organizations to inform the community of their services. There is always something new or different for pre-schoolers, children, youth, adults and seniors at the festival. As many as 4,000 people visit the festival each year to view the exhibits and enjoy food and live entertainment.

National Indigenous Peoples Day 2019

What: This event brings together First Nations, Metis and Inuit families through a celebration of the culture and traditions of Indigenous PeopleSurrey’s National Indigenous Peoples Day includes traditional games, crafts, activities and sports; traditional and non-traditional food sampling; cultural sharings, conversation and stage performances; and a variety of exhibitors offering health and wellness opportunities to the community

Park Play Palooza

What: Since 2006, Park Play Palooza is the annual kick-off event for Surrey’s free Park Play drop-in summer program for kids. Surrey Youth: Street Dance Showcase

What: Surrey’s first outdoor street dance competition at City Hall Plaza. There will be battles, performances, prizes, food and refreshments. Food and refreshments will be provided by the SAFE program and other community partners. Registration will open June 1.
