Strange Surrey Eagles jersey leaks and the internet can’t unsee it

You know what they say: no publicity is bad publicity.

While the Surrey Eagles would probably welcome some attention on them ahead of their 35th season in the city, this probably isn’t how they envisioned it.

Surrey Now-Leader reporter Tom Zillich posted a photo of a City of Surrey-themed Surrey Eagles jersey on Monday afternoon.

Suffice it to say, it’s a little different from your typical blue-and-green Surrey Eagles uniform.

Zillich did clarify that, according to Eagles co-owner Ron Brar, the jerseys won’t actually be worn during a game or warm-up. They will be used only during a red-carpet ceremony celebrating the 35th season.

Regardless, this wasn’t something the internet could simply unsee.

“These are the worst jerseys I’ve ever seen,” one commenter said. “This must be a joke, no?”

“The owner’s son of the Surrey Eagles must’ve made these on the premium version of ChatGPT,” said another.

“Need one more ‘Surrey’ on the front,” X user Chris Conte posted. “Also, the parked cars on the right arm make the jersey look a bit too busy.”

Hockey has certainly seen its fair share of bad jerseys before, but the level of business in this one certainly makes it unique.

Despite the overly busy nature of the Surrey Eagles leaked unis, some online reactions took a contrarian point of view.

“When I was a kid posting on the Canucks forums, everyone said the Flying V was the ugliest jersey in NHL history, but now everyone thinks it’s chic,” one Canucks podcaster wrote. “I believe the same will be true with this jersey.”

“These are so beautifully heinous, I’m kind of obsessed,” said another commenter.

“Wearing these to Coachella in 2038,” X user Justin Morissette said.

The Surrey Eagles kick off their 35th season on Friday, Sept. 18, at home against the Coquitlam Express.
