'He's cooking': Surrey 'N' driver caught on chopper cam, loses his dad's Cadillac

An 18-year-old driver who was driving his dad’s Cadillac SUV in Surrey at dangerous speeds likely won’t be driving it again any time soon.

The BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) has released some information and a stunning helicopter video of a speeding incident involving an 18-year-old driver from Abbotsford.

BCHP issued a very Big Brother-like warning for drivers in B.C.

“Unless you have eyes on top of your head, you’ll never know when a police helicopter is watching your driving,” it said.

The incident in question occurred on Oct. 13, showcasing a “two-time excessive speeder losing his dad’s 2026 Cadillac to an impound.”

BCHP says it’s likely the 18-year-old will lose his driver’s licence as well, in “a cautionary tale to other motorists.”

Thankfully, it shared the video that spotlights the speeding driver in stunning clarity from the perspective of the Air 1 helicopter.

You can hear the helicopter occupants making comments about the driver’s speeding, including, “Oh, it’s a Cadillac” and “Oh, he’s cooking!”

They also chat about their theories on whether the vehicle is electric or not. They remark that there’s no engine heat from the thermal camera.

The chopper also reports the top speed the vehicle was travelling at, which in this case was 175 km/h while in a 90 km/h zone.

They initially began clocking the driver, who appeared to be going much faster than the flow of traffic, on Highway 1 near Coquitlam. The driver was eventually pulled over in Surrey, west of 200th.

“Weaving through traffic while more than 80 [km/h] over the limit is unacceptably dangerous. We want every driver to see this video and understand that we’re using every tool at our disposal, including helicopters a thousand metres above your head, to keep our roads safer,” said BCHP Sergeant Michael McLaughlin.

The vehicle, which belonged to the 18-year-old’s father, was impounded the month before for excessive speeding as well.

For his speeding violation, the driver was issued an excessive speeding ticket of $368.

His “N” licence could also be suspended.
