Shelter offering free adoptions in bid to find forever homes for all its animals

This weekend, an animal shelter in Metro Vancouver is hoping to find some stray animals new homes.

On Saturday, November 16 and Sunday, November 17, the Surrey Animal Resource Centre (SARC) will be hosting its “Home Fur the Holiday” event. The two-day event, which is held at the resource centre, will see adoption fees waved for the entire weekend.

Visitors and potential owners will also get the chance to spend time with the animals in the SARC’s new adoption room or with the shelter dogs under the new gazebos.

The shelter will have a variety of animals available for adoption, such as dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and birds.

In typical holiday fashion, the adoption event will also have a holiday selfie station, a kids craft area, prize wheels, a cupcake and hot chocolate station, and a Pet food drive for SARC and the Surrey Food Bank.

The SARC notes, however, that the adoption process remains unchanged for the event. Any potential owners will need to fill out an application and meet with staff prior to the approval of adoption. A piece of photo ID, as well as proof of current address, is also required.

Last week, when the BC SPCA held its annual province-wide adoption event, which featured half-price fees, 212 animals were able to find homes.

“Our goal is to find the animals in our care a home for the holidays. An increase in adoptions creates more opportunity to help even more animals in need,” says Shelter Manager Shelley Joaquin on the City of Surrey website. “Our adoption matching process will remain the same to ensure it is a good environment for the animal and a good match for the person.”
