With brisk temperatures and shrinking daylight, the leaves have been changing into brilliant colours and tumbling down onto the ground.
There are several factors that cause leaves to change into their fall colours. This includes temperature, soil moisture and precipitation. However, the main causal element revolves around the amount of light or the lack of it.
As daylight grows shorter, it triggers chemical changes in deciduous plants and causes a corky blockage to form in the vessels between the twig and the stalk of a leaf. The closure of the vessels prevents the movement of nutrients and water into the leaf and an exit route for simple sugars.
With reduced light, no nutrients and a lack of water, it causes the “green” pigment chlorophyll of the leaves to die while yellow and red pigments take its place. These “fall colour” pigments exist in the leaf throughout the summer, however, they are hidden by the green chlorophyll. Eventually, the weak and fragile leaves fall from the push of breezes and the weight of rain.
We have all heard of the Northeastern American idea of “going upstate to see the leaves change colours” and it is a famed natural phenomenon that stretches all the way up to Eastern Canada.
However, as we already know, you do not have to travel all the way to the East Coast to see the changing of the leaves. Vancouverites are fortunate enough to have a stunning experience of their own right here in the city.
