SUP Your Way to Weight Loss

As the spring season is upon us some of you might be wondering what leisurely sports to partake in as the weather becomes warmer. Why don’t I help you decide with a little bit of insight as to which activities will help you burn off those unwanted pounds you accumulated over the winter?

Since we live in Vancouver we have a wide range of activities available to us right in our very own backyard. A newly popular activity for some in Vancouver is SUP boarding (stand up paddle boarding). For those of you who have never heard of SUP boarding you may have caught a glimpse of people out on the water standing on large boards, yep you’ve got it they are SUP boarding!

All you need is the board, one that resembles a surf board but much larger, and a paddle. You grab your board and paddle out into the water where it becomes just deep enough you can barely touch and hop on! Once you are on the board you navigate yourself across the calm waters. Sounds easy right?

Although this newly popular sport seems quite simple it actually requires a lot of core and upper body strength. Now don’t fret if you feel that your core strength isn’t quite up to par don’t let this deter you, beginners can start out on their knees.

This activity is an all around workout but still loads of fun! As I said previously it improves core strength. The core is responsible for supporting your body, thus keeping it strong is essential for everyday living. Once you get the hang of things and you improve your paddling abilities you’re not only getting a cardio workout but it’s also great strength training for your entire body. In just one hour you can burn anywhere between 500-1000 calories!

Vancouver has a few local rental shops where you can rent both the board and paddle for a very affordable price. This means you don’t even have to carry the equipment to the beach with you. I have provided a few links below for you, so click away and step into the SUP culture.
