There’s an overwhelming amount of apps out there (approximately 1.3 million for Android users and 1.2 million in Apple’s app store with around 75 billion downloads and 300 million views a week). But how do you know which ones to download? Which ones are worth paying for? How to differentiate between Google and Apple maps? Airbnb or Hotel Tonight? Tinder or Bumble? We’re in search of answering these questions and each week we’ll be bringing you our weekly app pick.
Sunrise
Sunrise is a beautifully designed free calendar app with an intuitive interface available across multiple major platforms. You’ll find Agenda or Google Cal, two decent free calendar apps; however, both apps lack a web companion unlike its Sunrise counterpart. The clean-user interface of Sunrise carries over onto iCloud, Google, and Exchange providing a consistent experience across platforms. And it is precisely this feature that makes Sunrise Calendar compelling for users to choose it over other calendar apps.
The app is extremely easy to install. Simply downloading the app allows you to connect via Facebook, Google or email. Once connected the app will automatically import previous calendars and contacts. Besides being one of the best looking Calendar apps out there, Sunrise adds more functionality with the integration of supported apps such as TripIt, Evernote, Asana, LinkedIn, and more so you can get travel plans and reminders all within the same app.
Consistent with the accessibility of Sunrise, navigating the app is extremely convenient. One feature of the app has it pick a unique icon for each event you create (cocktail glass for drinks; airplane for a flight; running man for your workout). Sunrise also allows users to add “Interesting Calendars” to the app. Avid sports fans can sync up their favourite teams’ schedules with their own or lunar enthusiasts can link up the moons different cycles, to name a few. Or Canucks fans with a particular interest in the lunar cycle and say, Russia’s national holidays, can have all three linked up in one interface. Possibilities are endless my friends.
The latest version: The latest version of the app (3.0 for iOS 8) brings users two new app integrations: Google Tasks and Eventbrite. Buying tickets and creating and editing tasks is now right in the same, convenient place. Also, the Today widget is perfect for showing the right amount of detail of upcoming events without having to open the actual app.
All in all, Sunrise is a calendar app superior to its counterparts. Clean, easy and attractive, the accessibility across platforms pushes Sunrise to the forefront of calendar apps available with noteworthy features and unique icons.
