Summer makeup tips: How to look great with little to no makeup

Dec 20 2017, 12:22 am

The worst part about wearing makeup in the summer is that awful feeling of the heat melting your makeup off your face. You also won’t be able to wear a ton of makeup if you plan on going swimming, and who wants to give up the water on a hot summer day?

Wearing makeup in the summer is impractical (and you’ll look a bit strange wearing bright red going-out lipstick to the beach) but it’s also uncomfortable. One of the biggest concerns women have surrounding this topic is how to look great without makeup on.

Here are some tips on how to look beautiful with little to no makeup:

Invest in your skin

If you invest in your skin by regularly getting deep-cleaning facial treatments done, you’ll be one giant step ahead of everyone else because you’ll have skin that glows even without makeup on. Treatments such as Hydrafacials from Physician Skincare Centre work wonders on your skin, making it radiant and beautiful even sans foundation.

Eliminate the need for makeup by getting eyelash extensions

Eyelash extensions create fuller, darker lashes and the results are similar to the results of eyeliner and mascara – the difference being that eyelash extensions create much better results with less muss and fuss. Liz Bussey, owner of Glow Lashes explains, “the majority of lash extension wearers don’t wear much makeup at all. Lash extensions give the illusion of makeup without the concern that you’ll emerge from the pool with raccoon eyes or have to wash off your mascara at night. By throwing away your mascara and getting lash extensions instead, you’re achieving a natural look while drawing attention to your gorgeous eyes.”  See a photo of one of Liz’s clients below for proof of how dramatically better your eyes look (without makeup) with eyelash extensions:

Protect your skin from the sun

Properly taking care of your skin involves always wearing sunscreen. Sunscreen protects your skin from the sun, keeping it gorgeous and healthy-looking. You’ll need to buy a good quality sunscreen that is specifically designed for the face, such as Sunforgettable SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen Brush or Clinique SPF 30 Sunscreen Face Cream and avoid using suncreen that’s meant for your body on your face.

Remember the rule of three

There are only three makeup items you should use in the summer: a waterproof mascara, a waterproof eyeliner, and a natural colour of lip stain. You can knock this down to only needing a lip stain if you have eyelash extensions. Face makeup such as liquid foundation or highlighting cream should be avoided at the beach since it will come off in the water or melt off in the heat. If you find that your skin looks tired or uneven without foundation on, call The Skin Girls. They’re mobile, and can come to your home to give you a quick but effective microdermabrasion, leaving your skin smooth and radiant.

Lip gloss is sticky and gets hot and uncomfortable quickly. Lip stains, however, will stay on your lips even after swimming and a natural colour is a great choice for a barely-there summer look. Revlon has some great matte lip stains in natural colours, and can be found at any Shoppers or London Drugs.

Many of us have blonde eyelashes, so it’s common to not want to give up mascara. A few coats of  waterproof mascara along with a thin and natural line of waterproof eyeliner will make your eyes pop without looking too overdone or dramatic. With eyes and lips that have a bit makeup barely applied, you’ll feel great and have achieved a natural summer look.

Try a tinted moisturizer

If you feel too bare without foundation or bronzer on, try a tinted moisturizer that has SPF in it. Since you need to wear sunscreen on your face to protect your skin, there’s nothing wrong with incorporating a tinted moisturizer – as long as it’s a minimum of SPF 30. Suntegrity’s SPF 30 ‘5 in 1’ Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen is a tinted moisturizer that doubles as a facial sunscreen. It gives your skin a dewy, glowing appearance while you still keep your ‘barely-there’ summer makeup look.

Take care of your skin

Having a great morning and bedtime skincare regime with great quality skincare products will keep your skin looking beautiful so that you don’t need to wear makeup.

Wash your face in the morning and apply a moisturizing day cream before you apply your sunscreen. At night, wash your face and apply a moisturizing night cream. If you keep your skin hydrated, it will always look dewy and fresh. Drinking plenty of water helps to keep your skin hydrated as well as eating water-rich foods such as cucumbers.

With these tips you’ll feel just as radiant and beautiful as the gorgeous summer weather.
