The Suburban Don is finally back from his much needed vacation. Today I will present a weekly segment called Suburban Spotlight, where I will discuss hidden gems in suburbia. To kick start this new segment will be Steveston Village in Richmond.
Steveston Village is a historic fishing village nestled in Richmond. It is a great place for visitors to get away from the big city and relax in a small town environment. Located in the village are great restaurants, such as Pajo’s at the Wharf, Reflections, and the Suburban Don’s personal favourite, Charthouse Restaurant. Not only do these fine establishments offer great food, but they also offer an even more spectacular waterfront view.
In addition to the food, located in the village is a Canadian National Historic Site, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. Tours are offered daily as the cannery has been in existence since 1870. In addition to the cannery, the Brittania Heritage Shipyard, another historic site, is also in the village. What makes this village so unique is that the fishing history is very important to its residents as it is the home to Canada’s largest fishing fleet.
In the evenings, a throng of people enter this historic village to take a stroll through its waterfront walkways and it is the best time to enjoy it for yourself. The Suburban Don visits this gem at least twice a week and you may be lucky to enjoy a chat with him and his Mrs., and if you don’t, I am sure you will run into a great resident or visitor as everyone here is very friendly and have good stories to tell.
