Starbucks says Pumpkin Spice Latte will use actual pumpkin

Bowing to the rally cries of its ardent devotees, Starbucks says that this year’s Pumpkin Spice Latte has been reformulated with the use of (gasp!) actual pumpkin.

The Seattle-born coffee chain took a lot of heat ahead of PSL season last year thanks to the “scientific” ramblings of a blogger known as the Food Babe; prime among her objections to the cherished autumnal treat is that is wasn’t made with pumpkin, but rather “Class IV Caramel Coloring” (two doses of it, no less!).

This week Starbucks couldn’t contain their glee in revealing that they have heeded the public’s demand for authentic pumpkin in their sugary coffee drink, announcing that the caramel coloring is no more.

Peter Dukes, director of espresso Americas and the creator of the PSL provided these thoughts in an e-mailed release:

After hearing from customers and partners about ingredients, we took another look at this beverage and why we created it so many years ago. It was simple – espresso, perfectly steamed milk, warm fall spices with delicious flavor of pumpkin pie that reminds you of the cool, crisp days of autumn. So, with that great taste you know and love, the PSL returns this fall, and this time it will be made with real pumpkin and without caramel coloring.

Basic bitches everywhere can stop clutching their “vintage” Forever 21 scarves in horror and instead jump for joy–right out of their Ugg boots.

Now, let’s return to our usual summertime Starbucks programming.
