Starbucks to begin testing curbside pick-up next month

As restaurants across Canada rejig their operations in response to the pandemic, Starbucks is accelerating its store transformation with the launch of curbside pick-up.

The company will begin testing the new program in 10 stores across Ontario, starting July 9, and will add 20 additional test locations in other provinces through the summer.

Curbside pick-up from the coffee purveyor will enable customers to be served in a safe and convenient way that respects physical distancing.

Powered by the Starbucks App, the new option will allow customers to place orders ahead of time, and choose the pick-up option if it’s applicable to their store. Upon arrival, customers can park in a designated curbside parking spot and check in using the app.

The store will be notified of the customer’s arrival, and a barista will gather the order and bring it out to the car.

While still offering a face-to-face experience, the curbside option offers reduced contact.

In-store, Starbucks says it has taken a number of precautions to prioritize safety including mandatory facial coverings for employees, and staff temperature checks.

Curbside pick-up joins the coffee joint’s other offerings of drive-thru, mobile ordering, grab-and-go, and in some locations, Uber Eats. As restrictions continue to lift, many Starbucks locations are now open with patio seating.
