Stanley Park homicide victim identified, police appeal for witnesses

The victim in Vancouver’s second homicide of the year, has been identified by police as 61-year-old Vancouver resident, Lubomir “Lubo” Kunik.

Just after 11 pm on Wednesday night, police were called to the area between Stanley Park’s Second and Third beach, in response to reports of a stabbing.

Upon their arrival, they found the man with “obvious” stab wounds, said VPD spokesperson Jason Doucette, on Thursday morning.

The victim, a Vancouver resident, was pronounced dead the scene.

The VPD confirmed that a “person of interest” was found in the area, not far from the crime scene. That person has since been taken into police custody.

Detectives want to speak with anyone who knows Lubo, or who had any contact with him leading up to his death on Wednesday night.

The VPD are also asking for anyone who was on the Stanley Park seawall between English Bay and Prospect Point on Wednesday night, between 8 and 11 p.m., to call detectives at 604-717-2500.
