7 tips for finding a new passion or hobby this summer

Aug 12 2020, 4:17 pm

Since the COVID-19 crisis began, all Canadians have experienced a shift in everyday life, whether big or small.

For you, this could mean transforming your home into an office-meets-gym overnight, adjusting to physically distanced get-togethers with your bubble, or embracing the opportunity to attend virtual events.

Whatever the case may be, it’s important to schedule time out for you in the midst of this new normal. This summer could be the perfect time to find a new hobby or passion — something you never considered before.

To help fuel your inspiration, we’ve teamed up with SPARKMOUTH Sparkling Water, a local company passionate about inspiring, celebrating, and supporting the “spark” that powers our best lives. Here are seven ideas to get you started.

Revisit your childhood passions

Cast your mind back to those younger years when responsibilities like paying bills and grocery shopping were taken care of by the grown-ups. What did you enjoy doing during those long-awaited summer breaks from school? (Running through sunflower gardens, anyone?) Revisiting your past passions can help you unlock joys and avenues of happiness you may have forgotten.

Channel creativity through nature

Vancouver is one of the most naturally beautiful cities in Canada, and there is no shortage of jaw-dropping vistas across the Lower Mainland. You can use this to your advantage and discover soul-nourishing trails through lush forested areas this summer. Who knows, planning hiking itineraries (and listing out the refreshing drinks to bring along with you) could become your new favourite pastime.

Rethink your everyday activities

When we do the same activities, in the same way, every single day, things can feel monotonous. This, however, doesn’t have to be the case. Changing up little things can bring you joy — reading in your local park instead of at home, experimenting with different recipes in the kitchen, tasting new beverages, or playing around with your personal style could be all that’s needed.

Go on an inspiration walk

Being cooped up at home for extended periods can stifle anyone’s creativity. And oftentimes, we find inspiration where we least expect it. This summer, venture out for an afternoon inspiration walk around your neighbourhood or along Main Street. Visit craft stores or boutiques owned by local designers. Ultimately, be inspired by the wondrous talent all around you.

Reflect through drawing and journaling

You don’t need to be an artist or a professional writer to explore drawing and journaling. Keeping a daily gratitude journal can help you reflect on what brings you the most happiness, and it allows you to celebrate your individuality. Pick up a pencil or paintbrush and see what kind of magic you can create on paper while expressing your true self.

Ask your friends and family

It can be difficult to have all the answers yourself, so why not chat with your nearest and dearest to see what they suggest? Chances are one of your pals or family members may already have an idea in mind that you could try, like kayaking or jogging. If they are interested in taking up a new hobby at the same time, you can keep each other motivated.

Pick up an instrument

Music has the power to make us feel good and dance like nobody is watching. If you’ve ever dreamt of being in a band or being the person who brings a guitar to every family gathering, why not learn how to play an instrument? Whether you start small with a tambourine or go straight for an electric guitar, there are tons of YouTube tutorials to help you feel supported.

This summer and beyond, SPARKMOUTH hopes to continue creating a space where everyone is welcome. The company is passionate about inspiring and celebrating healthier communities by connecting people to their spark through a variety of programs and initiatives.

Over the past few months, the beverage brand has celebrated the spark of those who have contributed greatly to the COVID-19 response — healthcare workers, police and fire departments, and more. It also helped graduates to find their spark when they weren’t able to celebrate in the typical ways.
