Small Business Profile: Cupcakes by Heather and Lori

A few years back while eating at my favourite fast food spot Steamrollers The Urban Dweller noticed that they had added cupcakes to their lineup. After scarfing one down, I was curious as to where such delicious sugar-filled treats came from. The manager at the time told me to go check out this cupcake store on Denman street, and since it was a warm summer day, The Urban Dweller decided to take the rest of the day off from work to check out this store.

The store, Cupcakes by Heather and Lori, was started by friends Heather and Lori and has since expanded to 3 locations in the metro area. Although the lineup was long, it was really well handled; the pink decor was a bit much, however I came for the cupcakes and they were simply delicious. There were so many to choose from, and it was a difficult choice, but finally a decision was made, Mint Condition. Other flavours include Denman (referring to their original location), Cosmopolitan (vanilla cake with chocolate butter cream and rainbow sprinkles, Blue Hawaii (coconut cake with blue vanilla butter cream topped with coconut sprinkles) among others. The cupcakes come in “minis”, “cupcakes”, and “big one” sizes. Only Money J Skeets after one of his rigorous workouts would devour the “big one”. They also do wedding cakes, cakes and have seasonal cupcakes.

Since opening their first location on 1116 Denman street six years ago (now moved to 1168 Denman Street), they have opened two more, 2887 W. Broadway and 3026 Edgemont Blvd in North Vancouver. Be sure to check them out and if you’re interested in franchising opportunities they are looking to expand nation wide. The Urban Dweller prefers to get his sugar fix from this local cupcakerie and I suggest you should too.
