As FIFA World Cup ends, maintenance will reduce weekend SkyTrain service in downtown Vancouver

The FIFA World Cup is over, and congestion on transit in Metro Vancouver should ease a bit, but SkyTrain service will be a bit slower on weekends due to maintenance.

TransLink shared that starting on Saturday, July 25, Expo Line service is going to be temporarily reduced on weekends in downtown Vancouver “through this fall.”

Service will be affected on early Saturday and Sunday mornings, and late nights on Sundays.

TransLink says that the “essential maintenance work” is a continuation of the LIM Rail Replacement program.

The program will see the upgrade of the rail assembly that powers the SkyTrain’s linear induction motors on the Expo Line. Once the upgrades are complete, it’ll match the assembly that powers the Millennium Line.

TransLink is asking transit users to allow up to 20 minutes of extra travel time during the scheduled maintenance.

Maintenance will take place during the following days and times:

  • Saturdays from 6:15 to 10 a.m.
  • Sundays from 7:15 to 10 a.m.
  • Sundays from 9:30 p.m. until 12:15 a.m.

If there are any changes, TransLink says that the digital screens at station entrances will provide that information.

Service on both the Canada Line and Millennium Line will not be affected.

TransLink also advises customers to check out Transit Alerts for up-to-date information on which Expo Line stations are impacted.

According to TransLink, the LIM Rail Replacement will help support the system’s optimal operation for years to come. It’ll help to accommodate SkyTrain expansion and increased ridership.

“Over the next several years, we’ll replace around 60,000 metres of LIM rail, working section by section along the 30-kilometre Expo Line,” TransLink says.
