Six-month detour and full closure of West Broadway at Cambie Street for subway construction begins next week

Another major and disruptive phase of the Broadway Subway construction project will begin early next week, as work enters its final stages and crews prepare to restore the roadway.
This past spring, the provincial government first announced that the two-block section of West Broadway between Cambie Street and Alberta Street would be fully closed for about six months, beginning sometime after the FIFA World Cup period.
The provincial government has now confirmed that the closure will begin on Monday, July 20, 2026, just one day after the tournament officially ends.

Pedestrian sidewalks will remain open to maintain access to businesses, but all general vehicle traffic and TransLink buses — including the busy 99 B-Line route — will be detoured around the closure using West 8th Avenue, one block to the north. Vehicle traffic will continue to flow through the intersection of Cambie Street and West Broadway, but not east of the intersection.
To support the detour, there will be fencing, signage, and temporary traffic measures along a three-block-long stretch of West 8th Avenue between Alberta Street and Ash Street (west of Cambie Street). Curbside vehicle parking along this West 8th Avenue segment will be removed to accommodate the additional vehicle traffic.
Drivers and TransLink bus riders should expect extra travel time while travelling through the area over the next half year.

Over the coming days, ahead of the July 20 closure start, there will be some preparatory work such as road cleaning, line painting, landscaping, electrical work, and the installation of safety medians.
Throughout the months-long closure, local side streets near the closure will remain open to drivers accessing businesses, residences, and services. However, drivers travelling through the area are strongly encouraged to use an alternative east-west route, such as West 12th Avenue to the south or West 2nd Avenue to the north.
The full closure, which is expected to remain in place until late 2026 or early 2027, will allow crews to safely dismantle the temporary traffic bridge deck structures spanning the two blocks between Cambie Street and Alberta Street. These structures sit above the Millennium Line’s Broadway-City Hall Station and a major crossover track switch.
The work will also involve filling the excavation above the tunnel roof with gravel, completing new underground utilities, and constructing the permanent roadway.
The closure is similar to the previous four-month shutdown of a one-block-long section of East Broadway between Quebec Street and Main Street, which was required to restore the roadway above Mount Pleasant Station. That closure began in late January and ended in mid-May 2026, with general vehicle traffic and buses detoured along East 8th Avenue during that period.

Businesses around Mount Pleasant Station previously expressed significant concern about the effects of the prolonged closure earlier this year, which added to the financial strain caused by years of construction-related disruptions.
In addition to Mount Pleasant Station and Broadway-City Hall Station, the Millennium Line’s Broadway extension includes four other new subway stations. However, the provincial government has confirmed that the remaining station sites located beneath Broadway will not require full road closures, with only partial lane closures needed to complete the work.
The six-km-long, six-station extension of SkyTrain’s Millennium Line, running from the existing VCC-Clark Station to Arbutus Street, is scheduled to open in late 2027.
Construction is now at a highly advanced stage. Track installation is nearing completion, allowing testing with actively operating trains to begin. As well, station construction has also visibly progressed to the point where station entrance buildings are taking shape at street level.
Work is also underway on the existing platforms at the Canada Line’s Broadway-City Hall Station. This includes extending the platforms and removing walls next to the bottom of the staircases to create direct underground pathways between the Canada Line platforms and the new Millennium Line platforms, which will effectively turn Broadway-City Hall into one of SkyTrain’s most important and busiest interchange hubs.
