20-year-old dies after daytime shooting in Coquitlam park

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is appealing for the public’s help in its investigation into the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man in Coquitlam on Monday evening.

According to IHIT, Coquitlam RCMP responded to a reported shooting at Town Centre Park at 1299 Pinetree Way around 6:30 pm.

Upon their arrival, police found the victim – identified as Bailey McKinney – lying on the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Now, IHIT has taken conduct of the investigation and is working with the Coquitlam RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS), and the BC Coroners Service to gather evidence.

“We believe this was a case of an individual being targeted for murder and not the park itself,” said Sgt. Frank Jang of IHIT. “Unfortunately, we know too well that these types of events can happen in any community.”

Jang said police are aware there were several people in the immediate area when the shooting occurred.

“Many of them fled the scene, understandably, from the shock of having witnessed a shooting,” he said. “However, if you were one of those people, we need you to come forward now.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or via email. Those who wish to leave an anonymous tip can do so by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
