Shangri-La Hotel’s time in downtown Vancouver comes to abrupt end

UPDATE: Shangri-La Vancouver Hotel is now temporarily rebranded as the “Hyatt Vancouver Downtown Alberni,” until it takes on its new permanent name of “Park Hyatt Vancouver” in 2026 following extensive renovations.

ORIGINAL STORY:

If you were trying to book a room at the Shangri-La in downtown Vancouver and were unable to do so, it appears that the hotel is no longer accepting bookings. However, there does seem to be a replacement.

If you travel over to the Shangri-La Vancouver website, you’re greeted with the following message from the hotel: “We wish to inform you that Shangri-La Group is no longer managing Shangri-La Vancouver and we are unable to accept reservations for this property through this channel,” the message says.

“We invite you to explore our other Shangri-La destinations and look forward to welcoming you soon.”

Additionally, social media accounts, like the Shangri-La Vancouver Instagram page, are no longer active.

The building, located at 1128 West Georgia St., is a Westbank property. The Shangri-La Hotel was opened in 2009.

Some local reports have suggested that Hyatt is set to take over. There appears to be some evidence supporting those reports. The Hyatt has a new listing on its website for “Hyatt Vancouver Downtown Alberni” that seems to be bookable.

“Unwind in 15 floors of contemporary elegance in the centre of Vancouver’s luxe shopping and nightlife hub. Find airy rooms and suites featuring natural light pouring through floor-to-ceiling windows, inspiring views and spacious marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs,” the Hyatt website says.

“Elevated amenities await you, including world-class dining and room service, a tranquil spa, an outdoor pool, a fitness centre and sophisticated event spaces for converging and celebrating. With our easy access to outdoor adventures and our exceptional service, Hyatt Vancouver Downtown Alberni (formerly Shangri-La Vancouver) offers the B.C. stay you’re looking for.”

The closure comes at a hectic time for the city, with the International AA Convention, which starts on July 3, expected to bring in tens of thousands of visitors to Vancouver. The cruise ship season is also in full swing.

We have contacted the communications team for both the Shangri-La and Hyatt for more information about this change.

While Shangri-La is the tallest building in Vancouver, it’s not the tallest building in Metro Vancouver. That distinction goes to Two Gilmore Place in Burnaby.
