Shangri-La to rebrand as Park Hyatt Vancouver Hotel after renovations

Don’t get too attached to the name “Hyatt Vancouver Downtown Alberni” — it’s simply a placeholder during the transition of the former Shangri-La Vancouver Hotel.
As reported by Daily Hive Urbanized on Monday, the Shangri-La Vancouver Hotel has officially ended operations under its previous brand and has immediately joined the Hyatt Hotels Corporation portfolio. It should be emphasized the hotel remains open without any disruption to operations and is available for booking through Hyatt’s global website.
However, the current name of “Hyatt Vancouver Downtown Alberni” is temporary, until the hotel is renamed as “Park Hyatt Vancouver” in 2026.

This new Park Hyatt Vancouver permanent name will be given to the property after it undergoes a multi-million dollar renovation that redesigns and enhances the hotel’s guest rooms, residential-style lobby, spa, and public spaces.
Currently, the hotel features prominent Asian-inspired design elements. The hotel’s Michelin-recommended and recently renovated Carlino Italian restaurant will remain.
Park Hyatt is a flagship luxury brand of Hyatt, positioned on the same level of calibre as the company’s Alila, Atona, and Grand Hyatt brands. This is British Columbia’s first Park Hyatt hotel.

“Reimagining this iconic luxury hotel will enable Hyatt to thoughtfully expand our luxury portfolio in Canada,” said Scott Richer, vice president of development and owner relations, Canada, Hyatt in a statement today.
“We’re excited for our plan to introduce the Park Hyatt brand to Vancouver in 2026, once we further elevate the hotel with refined design and signature experiences for our guests and World of Hyatt members. Together with Park Hyatt Toronto, the future Park Hyatt Vancouver will strengthen Hyatt’s luxury brand presence in Canada’s top urban markets and will offer the most discerning travellers a personalized experience in an intimate and enriching setting.”
This will mark the hotel property’s most significant renovation since it first opened over 16 years ago in January 2009, when the tower was completed. From the beginning, Shangri-La Vancouver Hotel operated under a 15-year contract, with an option to extend for an additional five years.
The tower itself is also expected to be renamed from its current “Living Shangri-La” designation. The first 15 floors house the hotel, offering 119 hotel guest rooms along with conference and meeting facilities, spa, and restaurant, while the upper floors, rising to the 62nd level, are occupied by luxury condominiums.
Although the 659-ft-tall tower remains the tallest building within the city of Vancouver, it recently lost its title as the tallest building in British Columbia to the newly completed Two Gilmore Place tower in Burnaby.

This newly-branded Hyatt property at 1128 West Georgia St. is now B.C.’s fifth Hyatt hotel, joining the longtime Hyatt Regency Vancouver located just one block to the east. In comparison, the Hyatt Regency brand is considered one of the chain’s “upper-upscale” offerings — a few tiers below the Park Hyatt.
With the dissolution of the Shangri-La Vancouver Hotel brand, the only remaining Shangri-La property in North America is now located in downtown Toronto, which opened in 2012. The overwhelming majority of locations in the Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts chain are found in Asia.
Both the Vancouver and Toronto mixed-use residential and hotel towers were developed by Westbank and designed by Vancouver-based James Cheng Architects.
