Self-serve alcohol has landed at BC Place.

B.C.’s first self-serve alcohol concession will debut at Wednesday’s Vancouver Whitecaps match, for fans of legal drinking age.

“Guests 19+ can now skip concession lineups by heading to section 215, where they can hand-select alcoholic beverages (plus hot food and snacks) and proceed through self-checkout,” PavCo announced.

Plans are underway for BC Place to eventually offer checkout-free concession technology, marking a first for any venue in the province.

Another first: Reusable cups

BC Place has also announced the launch of Canada’s first stadium-wide reusable cup program.

All draft beer, cocktails, and wine will now be served in reusable cups, in collaboration with Vancouver-based company ShareWares.

“The program eliminates the need for new materials and manufacturing for each serving, offering a more sustainable alternative to single-use recycling and composting,” BC Place said in a media release.

The move comes two years after BC Place introduced aluminum cups to replace plastic.

Fans will now be invited to drop their reusable cups in bins placed around the stadium. The cups are then washed and sanitized at the ShareWares Mount Pleasant wash lab.

The reusable cup program was launched as a pilot program in select areas of BC Place last year. BC Place states that it’s the next step towards achieving its mission of obtaining zero waste certification by 2026.

New food item

Lastly, BC Place has a new permanent food item.

Created in partnership with renowned Indigenous chef Andrew George of the Wet’suwet’en Bear Clan and the first Indigenous Red Seal chef in British Columbia, fans can sink their teeth into salmon and bannock burgers going forward.

Available at Beast on Fire at sections 217 and 236, the salmon and bannock burger was first unveiled as a special feature at select events.

Plans are in place to offer a fully Indigenous-focused concession stand in the future, with more special features expected to debut in the coming months.

BC Place has a packed events calendar in the coming weeks, with the Whitecaps hosting four more home matches before the MLS Cup Playoffs begin. The BC Lions have three more home games on their schedule. Canada Super 60 cricket comes to town in October, with matches taking place from Oct. 8 to 13.
