Russian President Vladimir Putin supposedly “scored eight goals” while playing a government-organized hockey match alongside NHL all-star players on Saturday.

This surreal — and oh so very convincing — machismo display of skill took place in Sochi. The match was held one day before Russia’s painful 6-1 defeat against Canada for gold in the hockey world championship, which made plenty room for mockery.

All jerseys were numbered 70, as the match was to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany.

The 62 year-old president’s team featured other government officials, businessmen, NHL stars such as Pavel Bure who played for the Vancouver Canucks in the 1990s, and retired Russian left wing Valeri Kamenski.

Putin’s team won 18-6, with the defence minister also taking home three goals.

Putin has tried to bolster his public image many times in the past through activities such as shirtless horseback riding and Formula One Racing.
