Runway Vancouver: Pony Hair Salon

Dec 19 2017, 4:24 pm

Pony Hair Salon is a brand new salon and retail space located in a beautiful storefront in Gastown. Officially open in November of 2012 by industry favourite Kristy Davies, the salon specializes in haircuts, hair colors and styling serviced by experienced professional stylists who are passionate about their craft. We feature their handy work in this edition of Runway Vancouver.

What’s the story behind how Pony got started?

Owner Kristy Davies had a vision to create a supremely comfortable space for clients looking for customized solutions for their hair. Part fashion zone, part neighborhood gathering place, and always welcoming. Pony is the incarnation of that vision, and was born just as soon as the right space on the right block with high ceilings and old floors and beams and great neighbours came available.

How would you describe a typical Pony’s customer?

The typical Pony customer is interesting and interested. Their style is unique and reflective of their diverse personalities, and usually hints at a hidden love for something unexpected. Our clients are most often true Westcoast: low-maintenance, prefer subtlety over showiness and tailor trends to suit themselves.

What’s the most unique thing about Pony?

That’s a hard one. There are many unique things about us! For people who have not met us yet, it is probably important to know that we provide a very streamlined variety of services. Cuts, styling and colours only. No extensions, straightening, perms, makeup or skincare. However, just to ensure variety, we carry locally-made Sugo Sauce pasta sauces and our own umbrellas.

What’s the best thing about living in Vancouver?

The people, the greenness, the ocean and the balance of beauty and activity.

What are some other local stores, brands, or designers Vancouverites should look out for and support?

Sugo Sauce! No, really, try it. We love Strathcona Stockings in all their amazing prints, almost everything at Nouvelle Nouvelle and Charlie and Lee, the fabulous consignments at Timeline Boutique, fun Tight Club and Tight Life workouts by Keighty Gallagher, having a ‘wurst at Bestie, and most everything that local designer Judith Feller has her hands into. And if you’re strolling Gastown, you need to check out the vintage finds at Duchesse Vintage, Community and Erin Templeton.

What can we expect from Pony in the next five years?

Amazing warm experiences to complement new haircuts and colors. A slow parade of motivated and talented newcomers to the industry, and a reliable cast of dedicated hair veterans. Plus, a rotating selection of great tea choices.

Where do you see the fashion and beauty industry going?

Hopefully, we see a slight return back to fantasy and craftsmanship and appreciation for hard work, which would mean a mild detour away from the selfies and It-Girls and sock buns. We see fashion and beauty going to a more beautiful place while making huge strides to ensure it is attainable.

On your lunch break, where do you go?

If it’s an early break, Cadeaux for a croissant. If it’s a little later, Nelson the Seagull or SeaMonstr Sushi. Or, if it’s an extended break, then a bicycle loop around the Seawall with an ice cream sandwich from Bestie to polish it off.

Favourite person of all time? Why?

Too hard to choose. Let’s say it’s a tie between Mom and Dad. Because they really are the best.

What is your favourite quote?

“Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.” – Oscar Wilde, we think?
