Dad charged with murder of 11-year-old Riya Rajkumar dies in hospital

The 41-year-old father who was facing first-degree murder charges in the death of his 11-year-old daughter has died while a patient in a trauma centre, according to Peel police.

Roopesh Rajkumar has been in hospital suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot since the night his daughter Riya Rajkumar’s body was found in his Brampton residence.  The discovery was made shortly after an Amber Alert was issued around 11 pm Thursday evening.

The investigation began just before 7 pm that evening after the girl’s mother informed police Riya had not been returned home at the expected time after celebrating her birthday that afternoon with her father.

The mother was concerned for Riya’s wellbeing after Roopesh made comments indicating he was going to harm himself and his daughter.

Riya was found deceased in her father’s home in the area of Queen Street and Hansen Road, police say. Roopesh was later located and arrested by OPP in the Township of Oro-Medonte as a result of the Amber Alert.

When Roopesh was arrested by provincial police, he was taken to a hospital after a gunshot wound was discovered. After initial hospital assessment, he was taken to a trauma centre for further treatment.

Roopesh Rajkumar’s passing falls on the same day as Riya’s funeral.

Investigators from the Homicide and Missing Persons Bureau are continuing their investigation into the death of Riya Rajkumar.
