Metal detectors to be installed at Rogers Arena

Dec 20 2017, 1:26 am

Big security changes are coming to Rogers Arena on September 22 in the form of metal detectors.

The Vancouver Canucks made the announcement and said it was part of an initiative to standardize security measures across all NHL venues.

Fans are now being asked to arrive 15 to 20 minutes earlier to be able to accommodate the extra time it will take to get everyone through the metal detectors. All metal objects will have to be placed in a bowl before they pass through the detector, just like at an airport.

Fans are also being encouraged to pack light and to check their tickets for the best entrance that will help them enter faster.

While pat-downs are unlikely, they will be employed in unique circumstances only in order to keep the flow of people coming into the arena consistent and quick.

Bags will continue to be checked as per previous protocols.

The safety measures are in accordance with NHL, NBA, MLB, and NFL standards.

A set list of banned items is still being upheld. The list includes the following:

  • Weapons – guns – firearms – ammunition
  • Self Defense Sprays – mace
  • Explosives
  • Fuels – torches – lighter fluid
  • Knives – brass knuckles – billy clubs – black jacks – kubatons
  • Martial Arts Weapons – night sticks – nunchucks – stun guns/tasers
  • Tools
