Some high school students in Richmond did some digging online and found their teacher’s Reddit account, and it sounds like they were horrified by what they found.
Jimmy Ho, the teacher involved, has been certified since October 2019.
On Oct. 10, 2023, the Richmond School District (No. 38) made a report to the British Columbia Commissioner for Teacher Regulation about what the students discovered.
The incident occurred almost right at the start of the school year.
Sometime around Sept. 15, 2023, two Grade 11 students at the school found Ho’s Reddit account through an internet search.
According to the Commissioner’s report, one of the first links that popped up was a picture of Ho, who was wearing a pink shirt, at the school. It included a link to his personal and public Reddit accounts. The students immediately recognized him.
After some further digging, the students found various posts and comments that Ho had made in different communities on Reddit over time.
The Commissioner’s report states that the posts included nude photos of Ho, photos of Ho engaging in sexual acts, and posts of a sexual nature.
Where things get complicated is when the photos and posts involved the school.
“The profile page also contained photographs of Ho, clothed, taken in connection with school activities, including one taken at the School,” the report states.
The Commissioner’s report states that the students were shocked and reported what they found to other teachers at the school, feeling that the posts were inappropriate.
“News of Ho’s Reddit account quickly spread through the School community.”
Ho has been on leave since Sept. 17, 2023, just two days after the initial discovery.
An investigation into the incident was ordered on Jan. 31, 2024. Ho agreed that the events revealed in the Commissioner’s report were true.
For his conduct, Ho agreed to a two-week suspension of his certificate, served between Oct. 25, 2026, and Nov. 7, 2026.
“By having sexual images of himself available on a public website, where he was identified as being a teacher, Ho failed to maintain the integrity, credibility and reputation of the teaching profession,” the report states.
