A Grade 5 student in a B.C. classroom wasn’t paying attention, so their teacher took an action that caused the student to fall and hit their head, leading them to become upset and cry.
According to the British Columbia Commissioner for Teacher Regulation, the incident occurred sometime around Fall 2025.
The Commissioner’s report states that names were redacted, including the teacher’s name, to protect the identity of the students who were harmed, abused, or exploited by the teacher.
The report states that Student A, who was a vulnerable student in the class, refused to listen to the teacher’s direction.
As a result, the teacher apparently tipped the student’s chair while they were seated.
The student had hit their head on a table, and the teacher never reported the injury to the school administration. The teacher instead spoke to the principal and requested that the principal come to the classroom to speak with the student.
At that point, Student A reported their injury and how it occurred to the principal.
The school district, which was not named, disciplined the teacher by suspending them for one day on Nov. 3, 2025. The teacher admitted that their conduct constituted “professional misconduct” under the Teachers Act.
As part of the consent resolution agreement, the teacher agreed that they would complete a professional learning course at the Justice Institute of British Columbia by Sept. 8, 2026.
According to the B.C. Commissioner’s report, the teacher did not maintain a safe learning environment for students and failed to model the appropriate behaviour expected of an educator. The report states that the teacher’s certificate was issued in 1992.
The teacher also agreed that they would not make any statements, whether oral or written, that contradicted, disputed, or called into question the consent resolution agreement or their admissions.
