10 things to do in Richmond this December

Fill your December with fun events happening in Richmond. From Festival of Trees to ArtRich 2019, here are 10 things to do in the city this month.

Steveston Festival of Trees

What: The event allows merchants and community groups from the Steveston area to show off their creative talents by decorating their own Christmas trees, which will be on display inside the historic cannery for a friendly competition. Receive a token with your admission to vote for your favourite tree, or bring a donation for the Richmond Food Bank to receive a voting token on market days.

When: December 1 to December 31, 2019
Time: 10 am to 5 pm
Where: Cannery Farmers’ Market – 12138 Fourth Avenue, Richmond
Admission: Regular admissions apply, except for on December 1, December 8, December 15, during Cannery Farmers’ Market Sundays when admissions are free.

Lighting of the Fire Hall

What: Hamilton Fire Hall No. 5 hosts an annual lighting ceremony with an afternoon of entertainment, activities, refreshments and more.

When: December 5, 2019
Time: 3:30 to 5 pm
Where: Fire Hall No. 5 – 22451 Westminster Hwy, Richmond
Admission: Free

Winter Hayrides in Steveston

What: Enjoy a winter hayride around Steveston Village, complete with a seasonal sing-a-long and viewing of local, holiday displays.

When: December 5 and December 6, 2019
Time: 6 to 8:30 pm. Hayrides leave every 30 minutes.
Where: Steveston Community Centre – 4111 Moncton Street, Richmond
Price: $7 per person, Pre-registration is required at Steveston Community Centre or by calling 604-238-8080.

ArtRich 2019

What: ArtsRich is a bi-annual juried exhibition for emerging and established artists from Richmond and nearby communities to exhibit together. Enjoy a wide variety of artworks from across the Lower Mainland.

When: December 6 (opening reception), exhibition open from December 7 to December 31, 2019
Time: 7 to 9 pm (opening reception), 10 am to 6 pm (Monday to Friday), 10 am to 5 pm (Saturday and Sunday)

Songs in the Snow – A Village Christmas

What: The Steveston Historical Society in cooperation with City of Richmond and Richmond Arts Coalition presents local musicians performing holiday classics. There will also be free hot chocolate, holiday activities, vintage-style Christmas crafts, and more for the family to enjoy.

When: December 7, December 14, December 21, 2019
Time: 4 to 6 pm
Where: Steveston Town Square Park – 3791 Moncton Street, Richmond
Admission: Free

A Victorian Christmas at London Heritage Farm

What: Enjoy a vintage Victorian Christmas while learning the London Family story and exploring the heritage house. Attendees can enjoy a cup of cider, pick up a present at the gift shop, and sign-up to make holiday Victorian crafts.

When: Saturdays and Sundays until December 15, 2019
Time: 12 to 5 pm
Where: London Heritage Farm Society – 6511 Dyke Road, Richmond
Admission: Free. Activity costs vary.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

What: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Catch the musical at Gateway Theatre in December and sing along to the biblical story of Joseph, Jacob, and the coat of many colours.

When: Various dates from December 12 until December 31, 2019

Public Menorah Lighting

What: Head to Richmond Public Library Brighouse Branch for the annual lighting of a 25-foot high steel menorah to celebrate Hanukkah. There will also be children entertainment and arts and crafts. Presented by The Ebco Group of Companies, Richmond Public Library and Richmond Cultural Centre, Chabad of Richmond, and The Bayit.

Community Movie: Enchanted

What: City Centre Community Centre hosts a Christmas Day screening of Enchanted. Light refreshments will also be available to enjoy.

Dancing Trees – Interactive Winter Lights

What: Steveston’s Town Square Park (located beside the Steveston Museum) features an interactive light display every evening for the rest of the year. Sponsored by Tourism Richmond.
