RCMP closer to unionization

The Mounted Police Professional Association of Canada anticipates change, as the Liberal government says legislation allowing RCMP members to unionize is coming.

Spokesperson Rob Creasser says it means front line RCMP officers will finally have a voice.

“Well it will probably be somewhat similar to the Ontario Provincial Police model. Front line members of the RCMP are going to have a much stronger voice in terms of equipment, training, benefits, salaries, and all of that.”

However, Creasser says unionizing the Mounties will also likely mean costs will go up for municipalities who use the force.

Last January the Supreme Court gave the federal government one year to table legislation allowing Mounties to organize.
