As his team prepares for a crucial playoff game against the Philadelphia 76ers, an eyebrow-raising rumour has materialized out of Washington DC concerning Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri.

Ujiri is “intrigued by the idea” of becoming the Wizards’ new general manager, according to a report by NBC Sports Washington.

The Nigerian-born Ujiri is attracted to the market, in part because of the role it could play in the “Basketball Without Borders” program, for which the Raptors’ president serves as its director, said the report. The program sponsors basketball camps and coaching clinics in Africa — a cause close to his heart.

Another dot to connect includes the fact that Ujiri’s wife grew up in the DC area.

Before you start freaking out, it should be noted that the report classified a Ujiri-to-Washington move as a “significant long shot.” As long as he’s under contract, Ujiri isn’t permitted talk to another NBA team without the Raptors’ permission.

Ujiri joined the Raptors in 2013 and signed a multi-year contract extension in 2016.
