Quinn Hughes didn’t win Norris Trophy but here’s how many first-place votes he got

Quinn Hughes has come up short in his quest of winning back-to-back Norris Trophies.

The Vancouver Canucks captain was outstanding in 2024-25, in a season where many of his team’s other top stars struggled. The 25-year-old defenceman recorded 76 points in just 68 games, a remarkable total given that Brock Boeser and Conor Garland finished tied for second in team scoring with 50 points.

Injuries played a factor in Hughes missing out on his second career Norris Trophy, as he was going up against two very worthy candidates, Zach Werenski and Cale Makar. In the end, Makar took home the second Norris Trophy of his outstanding career.

Makar was fantastic on the Colorado Avalanche’s back end this season, posting career highs with 30 goals and 92 points. He was viewed as the front runner for some time, and wound up finishing with 176 first-place votes.

Coming in second was Werenski, who nearly willed the Columbus Blue Jackets into the playoffs with a team-leading 82 points through 81 games. This marked the 27-year-old’s first time finishing as a top-three finalist for the award.

Hughes, who came in third, was able to pick up two first-placed votes, but was viewed by most as the third-best defenceman in the NHL this year, coming in at third place on 110 ballots. A few weren’t as impressed with his season, as he also received 12 fifth-placed votes.

This marked the second time that Hughes has been named a finalist for the Norris Trophy, and based on how his career is going, it certainly won’t be the last. He and Makar are viewed by most as the top two defencemen in the NHL, and should continue to battle one another for several years for the Norris.
