The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is issuing a warning about a violent offender with a history of violence and sexual assault who will be residing in the city.
Tyler Gordon Strathdee was recently released from custody and is now living in a halfway house in Vancouver.
“Vancouver Police believe Strathdee poses significant risk of harm and is a high risk to commit further physical and sexual violence,” the VPD said in a statement.
Vancouver Police says the violent offender is serving an 11-year and two-month sentence for crimes that were committed in Alberta. His offences include robbery, assault with a weapon, sexual assault and manslaughter.
“Although his sentence expires in 2028, he has obtained statutory release, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence in the community, with certain conditions,” VPD said.
This isn’t the first time that the VPD has issued a warning about Strathdee. In December 2024, Strathdee obtained a statutory release in Alberta and chose to live in a halfway house in Vancouver. In February 2025, he was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant. At the time, he was living in a halfway house in the Downtown Eastside.
“He was re-arrested in February 2025 and later charged with robbery, but was acquitted following a trial in BC Provincial Court,” VPD adds.
With Strathdee’s release, several conditions have been imposed, including:
- He is not to consume drugs or alcohol
- He must not associate or communicate with anyone involved in criminal activity and/or substance misuse
- He must not be in the presence of sex-trade workers
- He must report all sexual and non-sexual relationships and friendships to a parole supervisor
“Investigators from VPD’s High Risk Offender Unit will work with Correctional Service Canada to monitor Strathdee, and ask anyone who observes him breaching his release conditions to contact police immediately,” VPD said.
