More than two dozen police officers responded to the scene of an arrest in downtown Vancouver Thursday night where a suspect armed with a gun was subdued with plastic bullets.
The Vancouver Police Department’s Sgt. Steve Addison told Daily Hive it all began when a witness flagged down a sergeant who was patrolling the downtown core around 7 pm. The witness said they’d seen a man with a gun enter a residential building near Seymour and Nelson streets.

Emergency Response Team officers and a K9 unit arrived at the scene and found the suspect in a taxi with several other people. Police said he refused to comply with directions from officers at first.
That’s when officers released the police dog and fired an ARWEN gun, which uses hard plastic bullets, which are less lethal than regular ones.
The 30-year-old suspect was eventually arrested. Addison said he was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for parole violations. Police expect additional charges for gun possession and breach of probation will come soon.
The force could not name the man yet because formal charges for the new offences have not yet been filed.
