Pistachios have been all the rage over the last little while, but anyone who bought the trendy nuts from a North Vancouver retailer is being asked not to consume them.

According to a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) bulletin, pistachios from Kourosh Foods Market in North Vancouver, with the product code beginning with 200422, could be contaminated with salmonella. The recall was issued on Tuesday, Oct. 7.

Kourosh Foods Market specializes in Persian food products.

CFIA says, “Do not consume, use, sell, serve or distribute recalled products,” and offers some additional guidance, including:

  • Contact your health provider if you feel sick from consuming a recalled product
  • Ensure your product has been recalled
  • Throw the product out or return it to the retailer

Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections,” CFIA adds.

“Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.”

The popularity of pistachios has skyrocketed in recent years, following a Dubai chocolate trend that gained significant momentum, which BBC Food attributes to the primary reason for the surge in popularity. Even Vancouver-based chocolatier Purdy’s jumped on the pistachio train with a limited-edition pistachio chocolate collection.

Last month, there was another recall for pistachios bought in other Canadian provinces, also due to potential salmonella contamination. Many people got sick due to that outbreak.
