These 21 photos of empty Vancouver streets are eerily beautiful

As Vancouver continues to grow into a bustling urban centre, traffic, congestion, and crowded sidewalks seem to be the norm of downtown life.

So when you’re presented with a series of images that show some of the city’s busiest streets completely empty, it tends to give you an unsettling feeling.

That’s what photographer Derek Bermingham set out to do. He hit the streets of downtown Vancouver on Christmas Day to capture the city on the most hushed day of the year. For the past 10 years, Bermingham has set up his camera on Christmas morning to get the eerie shots. He started the project in Dublin and it made the move to Vancouver when he did.
