If a pet dog or cat just isn’t in the cards, then the City of Vancouver has a solution for you.

The city has taken to social media to showcase their animal shelter’s latest promotion.

Right now, you can adopt a pet rat for the low, low price of $5.

And no, this isn’t a late April fools joke.

“They’re clean, social, and super smart,” reads the City of Vancouver’s Instagram post. “They can also be trained to use a ‘rat toilet’ and respond to commands.”

“Incredibly friendly, rats enjoy human companionship and make great pets for children – even better than mice, gerbils, and some hamsters.”

Reactions from social media users were…mixed, to say the least. But you can’t blame the city for trying.

Anyone who is interested can find more information online or email the animal shelter directly.

After all, every “pet” needs a FURever home.
