When the Pattullo Bridge replacement is expected to open

We’ve known for a while that the yet-to-be-named Pattullo Bridge replacement is expected to open in 2025, but the BC Ministry of Transportation has revealed a more specific timeframe.

In a statement to Daily Hive Urbanized, the ministry confirmed some details regarding the bridge opening, following remarks made by Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Mike Farnworth at an event this past Monday.

Last year, we learned that the bridge opening was pushed to Fall 2025. It appears the bridge’s opening will take place a little bit beyond that. Farnworth’s revelation at Monday’s event suggested that the new bridge would be open to vehicle traffic by Christmas, and the ministry confirmed that detail with Daily Hive Urbanized

The ministry informed Daily Hive Urbanized that in October, the final stay cables will be installed and the bridge deck will be connected to the north approach in New Westminster. Additionally, bridge deck finishings, including barriers, utilities and fencing, will occur around the same time.

“Commuters from New Westminster and Surrey will also see improved connections and upgrades from the existing road networks on both sides of the new bridge,” the ministry added.

Some of the expected improvements include wider lanes separated by a centre median barrier, as well as wider walking and cycling paths in both directions.

The ministry states that the replacement bridge will enhance safety and reliability for all types of commuters, as well as improve the flow of goods and services.

Progress on the bridge appears to have accelerated significantly over the past few months; however, the new bridge still lacks a name.

New Indigenous artwork has been embedded into a large surface beneath the recently opened Highway 17-Old Yale Road overpass, marking the first significant art installation as part of the new replacement Pattullo Bridge project.

Traffic was redirected onto the new overpass in early June 2025, as construction continues on the broader initiative to replace the aging Pattullo Bridge. In recognition of the historic and ongoing Indigenous presence in the region, the project includes a comprehensive First Nations cultural recognition program.

It has also been revealed that the new crossing will not retain the 88-year-old “Pattullo Bridge” name, which honours Thomas Dufferin Pattullo, the premier of British Columbia from 1933 to 1941. He oversaw the bridge’s original construction during the Great Depression and the province’s initial wartime efforts in World War II.

Further details are expected later this year.
