The $1.637 billion replacement crossing for the Pattullo Bridge is well underway, and new footage shows the significant progress that’s been made on the project.

The Pattullo Bridge Replacement recently released flyover footage of construction throughout March from Surrey to New Westminster.

The bridge’s cable towers appear to be near completion, and crews are continuing work on finishing segments of the bridge deck.

According to the project’s website, the new four-lane toll-free bridge will contain modern, wider lanes, separated by a centre median barrier.

It will also have dedicated walking and cycling lanes separated from traffic by a barrier on both sides of the bridge.

The Pattullo replacement was initially scheduled to open at the end of 2024, but that completion date has now been pushed to fall 2025.

According to previous statements from the provincial government, because the project began construction amidst the pandemic, it was particularly impacted by supply chain delays for special components from manufacturing hubs including China, France, Italy, India, Indonesia, and Spain. After the pandemic, there were continued supply chain impacts on the fabrication of bridge components, particularly structural steel shipments from China.

The existing bridge is still being used as the main connector between New Westminster and Surrey, and once the new structure opens, the old Pattullo Bridge will be removed.

A previous TransLink analysis deemed that the existing bridge would have to be decommissioned by no later than 2024, given its rate of deterioration.

Wendy Itagawa, the provincial government’s executive director for the Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project, told Daily Hive Urbanized in an interview last year that TransLink had a “robust program” for maintenance and inspections in place to sustain the bridge’s operations over the course of another year.

However, following a fatal crash on the bridge in February 2025, some advocates demanded heightened safety measures and a petition was started by a Burnaby resident calling for the existing four-lane bridge to be limited to a single lane in each direction and for concrete barriers separating the traffic directions to be installed.

That petition did not gain much steam, however, as only 254 signatures of its 500 goal have been collected so far.
