A deadly crash on the Pattullo Bridge between Surrey and New Westminster has fully shut down the crossing in both directions.
According to Surrey Police Service, the incident occurred at about 10 pm on Friday, February 14, when emergency responders were advised of a collision involving three vehicles — one semi-trailer truck and two passenger vehicles.
The crash occurred on the east end of the bridge in the southbound lanes.
Surrey Fire Service and paramedics administered lifesaving measures to three occupants of the vehicles, but they were declared deceased at the scene.
One other occupant in a passenger vehicle was transported to hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. According to SPS, the extent of the surviving occupants’ injuries are currently unknown. The driver of the semi-trailer truck was unhurt and remained at the scene.
Both the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) and the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit Criminal Collision Investigation Team (CCIT) have been called to assist in the investigation. The cause of the collision is currently unknown, according to a release.
The closure of the bridge is expected to last throughout the night and likely well into Saturday morning.
This is one of the deadliest vehicle collisions in Metro Vancouver in years. It also comes just weeks after another deadly collision on the Pattullo Bridge on January 26, in which one person was killed in a crash involving five vehicles, including a bus.
