Pattullo Bridge to be closed for three weekends this summer for maintenance

The Pattullo Bridge will be closed for a total of three weekends this summer in order to make improvements and repairs to the 77-year-old structure. 

The bridge will be closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and bikers from July 25 to 28, August 15 to 18, and August 29 to September 1.

According to TransLink’s website, during the first weekend of closures, the lanes will be closed beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday evening and will reopen at 3 a.m. Monday morning. Over the following two weekends, the bridge will close at 9 p.m. on Friday evenings and reopen at 3 a.m. on Monday morning.

Much-needed maintenance is required for the aging and seismically challenged bridge. The closure will allow crews to repair parts of the concrete deck and repave sections of the bridge.

Meanwhile, TransLink’s governing Mayors’ Council has proposed to build a new $1 billion, four-lane replacement bridge with the capability of adding two more lanes for additional future capacity.

The Pattullo Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in the Lower Mainland and is a major connection between Surrey, New Westminster and Burnaby.

Until a new bridge can be built, TransLink will be proceeding with a $300 million rehabilitation project to improve the bridge deck and structure’s seismic resiliency over the interim.
