Is more paid parking coming to Metropolis at Metrotown?

If you’ve recently visited Metropolis at Metrotown, you may have noticed signs going up for paid parking in some areas of the mall’s large underground parkade.
Photos of these new Impark paid-parking signs were recently shared on the Burnaby Reddit page, drawing concern from mall patrons. The signs appear to be in the mall’s west portion.

Another photo was posted of the completed sign, which indicates that paid parking is in effect from Monday to Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. for Metrotower I and II.
The Merotower Office Complex is made up of two towers, separate from the Metropolis at Metrotown mall building. However, access and parking for the towers are available through the mall’s underground parkade.
The buildings have a number of prominent business tenants, including ADP Canada, Ivanhoe Cambridge, and Royal Bank of Canada.

Redditors in the comments questioned whether these signs meant there was more paid parking to come for the mall, which is predominantly free for patrons, within a four-hour limit.
In 2019, a new parking policy was introduced for more than half of the ground-level parking spaces along the mall’s frontage on Kingsway.
Much of that parking space located at the northeast corner of the Kingsway lot is now being developed into the first phase of the Concord Metrotown development.

Amanda Chung, marketing manager for Metropolis at Metrotown (MET), clarified which areas of the mall the paid parking is in effect for.
“There are a number of paid parking stalls under the management of Metrotowers on both P1 and P2 in the area near SportChek,” she stated.
“[The] P2 area has implemented paid parking for several years. [The] P1 area [was] just implemented,” she said, specifying that this was for the Metrotower offices only.
“MET has an abundance of free parking available,” added Chung. “As of now, no news about more paid parking to come.”
