Woman caught sleeping in Tesla while driving in North Vancouver
A Maple Ridge woman has been handed a ticket for allegedly being asleep behind the wheel of her Tesla in North Vancouver, and two witnesses are willing to testify to it in court.
The wild driving incident took place on Aug. 11, just before 3:30 p.m.
B.C. Highway Patrol (BCHP) says that the event took place on Highway 1 near Mountain Highway in North Vancouver.
The two witnesses called police about a driver who “appeared to be asleep behind the wheel of a Tesla.”
Both of the witnesses were travelling in the same vehicle, and the passenger decided to record a video from the passenger seat.
“Based on the description provided by the witnesses, and the video evidence, BC Highway Patrol tracked down the registered owner of the Tesla at her home in Maple Ridge,” BCHP said.
BCHP also shared a short video of the seemingly sleeping driver.
BCHP says the driver of the Tesla is a 45-year-old woman from Maple Ridge.
The driver was issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention, which carries with it a fine of $368.
“Police will not debate the merits of self-driving technology with sleeping drivers. It’s illegal in B.C., and we’re here to enforce the law and keep roads safe,” said Sergeant Michael McLaughlin with BCHP in a statement.
“Driver inattention is a major factor in serious and deadly collisions. You must be completely focused and alert when you’re behind the wheel of any motor vehicle in B.C.”
