NHL player ditches Tesla but has a bizarre non-Elon reason for doing so

Washington Capitals defenceman Jakob Chychrun is known for walking to the beat of his own drum.

The blueliner has several unorthodox ideas regarding health and wellness, which he reveals in interviews and behind-the-scenes content.

The latest involves selling his family’s Tesla, which he says he and his wife have owned for some time. While Tesla trade-ins have become popular as owners protest the company’s CEO Elon Musk’s actions as senior advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump, Chychrun didn’t cite political reasons for getting rid of his car.

“We actually bought a new car a few weeks ago,” said Chychrun on 106.7 The Fan’s Grant & Danny show.Ā  “We had a Tesla for a while that we’ve wanted to get rid of. We’re pretty big, as you guys know, we talk about our health and wellness a lot. We just had a weird feeling about sitting on a battery all day in the car so we wanted to get rid of the Tesla, move on from the electric. I got my wife her dream car, which was a G-Wagon.”

It’s just yet another example of an outside-the-box health idea from Chychrun who is full of them. One of hisĀ Capitals teammates, Dylan Strome, also recently revealed that the defenceman is trying to move away from light bulbs in yet another curious health-motivated decision.

“I heard yesterday that he’s no light bulbs,” said Strome on theĀ NHL UnscriptedĀ podcast. “He’s doing candle-lit in his house now. Yeah, that’s what his thing was yesterday. So he was on to – beeswax candles is what I heard is great for you. So now we’re all talking about beeswax candles.ā€

Chychrun also shocked the hockey world when he discussed his diet in an interview a few years back. It includes plenty of items which sound less than savoury and which you will not find at your local restaurant.

ā€œThe guys think I’m crazy. My family thinks I’m crazy. My girlfriend thinks I’m crazy,ā€ he said to GoPHNX.com’s Craig Morgan back in 2022. ā€œIt’s a lot of protein, and I’m not really eating carbs.”

“On game days. I’ll eat some sweet potatoes, some white rice, fruit, but all my dairy stuff I try to get raw. I’m really big into that. It’s like an ancestral way of living, and I’m also eating raw liver, raw beef heart, doing all this crazy stuff. The taste is awful, but your body almost craves it when you eat it consistently because it’s just so nutrient-dense.”

While he has some different ideas, they seem to be working for Chychrun. He’s a key piece on the Eastern Conference-leading Capitals and has 44 points in 66 games so far this year. He recently signed a massive eight-year, $72 million contract extension to stick with the Capitals for the future.
